Thank you for your interest in an internship with the Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence. Below you will find a variety of program and administrative tasks where you could best help us. All internships are unpaid and can be available for class credit.

Marketing & Communications Intern

Supervised by: Director of Development

Role and Responsibilities: The Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence is a non-profit organization located in Boston, MA. Its mission is to eliminate family violence and strengthen Asian families and communities.

The Marketing & Communications Intern is an integral member of the Development Department. This busy team sends out an annual report in January, holds two major special events (spring/fall), manages a donor database, writes grant proposals and coordinates mailings, among many other fundraising and communications activities. The intern provides administrative assistance to the team, as needed. The intern will work both with the team and independently, based on experience. This is a great opportunity to gain small shop fundraising experience.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Dreamweaver, Publisher or other publishing software
  • Available 8+ hours per week
  • High school or college students welcome

Finance Intern

Supervised by: Manager of Finance and Administration

Role and Responsibilities: The role of the Finance Intern is to assist the Financial Manager with daily tasks and on-going projects. The Finance Intern must be able to commit at least 3 months (6 months preferred) for 10-15 hours/week.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • File as needed and make sure all files are kept in order
  • Take deposits to bank when needed, and deliver grants monthly
  • Assist Financial Assistant in organizing employee files
  • Update internal Finance binders and folders
  • Update In Kind Donation binder monthly
  • Assist Financial Manager with audit preparation
    • Invoice Organizing
    • In-Kind Donation Summaries
    • Reconciling QuickBooks information
  • Update the vendor filed

Qualifications:

  • Background in finance/accounting preferred
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks software or other accounting software a plus
  • Attention to detail and organization
  • Commitment to our mission of eradication of domestic violence and to strengthen Asian families and communities
  • A sense of humor
  • Ability to work respectfully in a multicultural environment

Education and Outreach Intern

Supervised by: Education and Outreach Coordinator

Roles and Responsibilities: The role of the Education and Outreach Intern is to provide support to the Education and Outreach Department. Responsibilities will include assisting the Education and Outreach Department in various projects. The Education and Outreach Intern will gain experience in non-profit work, youth empowerment, cultural competency, curriculum development, working with diverse/immigrant communities, community organizing and outreach.

Must be able to commit at least 3 months (6 months preferred) for at least 7 hours (one day)/week.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Help develop/update youth and adult educational curricula around domestic violence, teen dating violence, gender and the media, cultural competency…etc.
  • Prepare outreach and educational materials and packets
  • Provide assistance in designing outreach and educational materials such as brochures, resource cards, giveaways etc.
  • Provide support at outreach events/functions (e.g. cultural festivals, college fairs etc.)
  • Research online updated domestic violence news/policies/articles.

Qualifications:

  • Women’s Studies, Gender Studies, Marketing, Public Relations, Social Sciences or related major
  • Experience in graphic design preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
  • Ability to work respectfully in a multicultural setting
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Commitment to our agency’s mission of elimination of domestic violence and to strengthen Asian communities
  • A sense of humor

Shelter Intern

Supervised by: Assistant Director of Advocacy Services or Family Program Coordinator

Roles and Responsibility: Therole of the Shelter Intern is to provide support at the shelter and the Community-Based Service office. Responsibilities will include assisting the shelter staff and the Community Based Service staff in various activities and projects. Must be able to commit at least 3 months (6 months to one year preferred) for 15 hours/week (20-35 hours preferred).

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Manage a client’s case under the close supervision by staff
  • Cover the hotline shift
  • Accompany clients to appointments
  • Assist clients with housing search, job search, directions, and anything else they may need
  • Teach life skills (transportation, grocery, computer, library, etc)
  • Plan in-house activities and/or field trips for women, children and families
  • Develop and conducting age appropriate activities for children that are not yet enrolled in daycare/school
  • Provide child care while residents are in meetings (evening) or at appointments
  • Provide office support (answer phones, file, errands)
  • Maintain playroom, donation room, supply room, and food pantry
  • Solicit donations as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Note: Shelter Intern can be assigned to a specifically designed project.

  • Ability to take the initiative, and to work independently and as a team player
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task

Grant Associate Intern

Supervised by: Senior Grant Writer

Roles and Responsibilities: The Grant Associate Intern is an essential team member of a three-person Development Department in its efforts to raise nearly $2 million annually. This position includes prospect grant research, grant writing assistance, and administrative assistance.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Identify and collect necessary information of potential funding sources.
  • Assist the Development team in writing proposals and mailing them out in a timely fashion.
  • Provide general administrative support to all Development Department staff.
  • The intern will work both with the team and independently, based on experience.

Qualifications:

  • Senior high school or college students welcome.
  • Experience in research and basic knowledge of Word, Excel, and the Internet.
  • Available minimum 8+ hours per week.
  • Must have multitasking, organization and time-management skills.
  • Pro-active, self-starter with ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • The ideal candidate should have an appreciation for diversity and for women's issues specific to immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Must respect and maintain confidentiality.

Special Events Intern

Supervised by: Development Director

Roles and Responsibilities: The Special Events Intern is an essential team member of a three-person Development Department in its efforts to raise nearly $2 million annually. The intern works closely with Department staff to plan and execute all aspects of events that attract from 200 to 600 guests.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all aspects of event logistics including staffing, venue, materials, registration, timelines, and entertainment for each event.
  • Help determine staffing needs, create job descriptions and recruit volunteers.
  • Promote and market event, and solicit and coordinate placement of greetings in program book.
  • Pack and ship materials to ensure that all event materials reach the venue on time.
  • Assist with on-site management at the event.
  • Assist in post event debriefing and activities such as writing thank-you notes and compiling evaluations.
  • Provide general administrative support to all Development Department staff, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Senior high school or college students welcome.
  • Experience in planning any sized events preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet.
  • Available minimum 8+ hours per week.
  • Must have multitasking, organization and time-management skills.
  • Pro-active, self-starter with ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • The ideal candidate should have an appreciation for diversity and for women's issues specific to immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Must maintain and respect confidentiality.

Advocacy Intern

Supervised by: Cambodian Advocate

Roles and Responsibilities: The role of the Advocacy Assistant Intern is to provide support at the Lowell office and act as a liaison to connect the clients to the Advocates and the agency. Responsibilities will include assisting the Lowell staff in various advocacy services and administrative tasks. M ust be able to commit at least 9 months (2 semesters) for the minimum of 12 hours per week.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct initial phone intakes with potential clients
  • Provide the clients with referrals and local resources
  • Accompany the clients to various offices for appointments such as housing, SSI, DTA, court, and Food Pantry
  • Assist the clients to pick up donations
  • Provide childcare during the meeting between the client and the Advocate
  • Answer the phones, take the messages, handle inquiries and transfer call to the Advocates or hotline for emergency
  • Provide overall administrative and clerical support to the Lowell staff
  • Pick up and sort mail from P.O. Box.
  • Assist the Lowell staff for other services as needed

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of either Khmer, Lao, or Thai language preferred
  • Ability to take initiative, and to work independently and as a team player
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Access to a vehicle preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work respectfully in a multicultural environment
  • Commitment to our agency’s mission of elimination of domestic violence and to strengthen Asian communities
  • A sense of humor
