YEP tabling at India Day Boston on Sunday, August 14, 2011 |
Our Youth Empowerment Project participated in the annual India Day event to celebrate the independence of India at the Hatch Shel. Many people stopped by at ATASK's booth to play the quiz on our new Wheel of Fortune that displayed a special anti-violence message and pick up one of our cool prizes. It was a cheerful way to motivate people to take a stand against domestic violence.
Voice of the Unheard
YEP (Youth Empowerment Project) is putting together the 2nd issue of their annual youth zine, Voices of the Unheard. It is a publication of original art, poetry, videos, music, and photography against violence and oppression. As a group, YEP is also working on a public service announcement to raise awareness about dating violence.

Client Success Story |
|
CH is originally from Cambodia and was experiencing physical, verbal, and mental abuse from her boyfriend, father of her children. She was in hopeless relationship until a local hospital in Lawrence referred her to ATASK in the winter of 2009. It was a start of her journey to break a cycle of domestic violence. ATASK
advocates helped her move to the emergency shelter. She obtained a restraining order against her boyfriend. The advocates accompanied her to court to fight for child support. Now she is about to start her new life. All the best for CH and her two children. ATASK is proud to be part of CH's walk to a better life. |

Volunteer Highlight |
|
 |
|
Kumiko Strauss | Kumiko Strauss is a volunteer for the Life Skills/English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program at ATASK. She works with the students with challenging situations to help them attend classes continuously. The contribution of volunteers and interns are valuable for ATASK and we are grateful for their work.
"Though my time with ATASK has only been a year, I have already seen some of our clients move on to training programs to acquire skills for a better job. I find it to be a rewarding experience to see a former student come to visit us during class to update us on where they are in life. And I do hope to have more of these experiences as I continue to volunteer at ATASK's ESOL program".
