About Us: 

ATASK is the only multilingual and multicultural domestic violence organization in Massachusetts dedicated to serving the Asian and Pacific Islander community. Our culturally specific services, offered in over 20 Asian languages, include a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, case management and advocacy, legal consultation and representation, and English classes.

 

For over 30 years, ATASK has been at the forefront of empowering Asian survivors of domestic violence and abuse to rebuild their lives. Our work bridges language and cultural gaps for Asian communities and advocates for social change.

 

About the Position: ATASK is in search of a passionate and dedicated individual to join our shelter team as a per diem Childcare Assistant. The position is based out of our Emergency Shelter in Boston, serving clients throughout Massachusetts and occasionally bordering states to provide needed services to victims, survivors, and their children.

 

In this role, the Childcare Assistant supports the overall care of children in the program. They provide supervision, lead safe and age-appropriate activities in the playroom, and ensure a safe environment. The Childcare Assistant also provides regular updates to the Co-Shelter Manager and submits incident reports when necessary.

 

Location and Commitments:

  • Per diem, non-exempt, work hours are determined by organizational needs.
  • This is an onsite position.
  • Flexible schedule is expected

 

Reports to: Co- Shelter Manager

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Childcare Assistant is responsible for providing care for and supervision of the children in the program.

 

Direct Service Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage children in age-appropriate activities.
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for children in the shelter.
  • Provide physical care and cleaning of young children as required, including changing diapers, assisting with toileting, wiping runny noses and providing hand sanitizer.
  • Develop and maintain supportive relationships with shelter clients and their families.
  • Plan and implement indoor and outdoor activities, including songs, puzzles, arts and crafts, reading and games.
  • Communicate with parents via the GroupMe App about any emergencies that arise or if they request to be notified about specific situations while their child is being cared for.

 

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Follow shelter policies regarding confidentiality and safety.
  • Plan activities in advance using the Shelter’s suggested activity list to ensure readiness upon arrival; and update the list with additional ideas as needed.
  • Maintain open communication with shelter staff and parents using GroupMe App.
  • Provide a summary of activities to shelter office staff to include in the monthly newsletters.
  • Ensure safety and cleanliness of playroom, including organizing toys and notifying Shelter Co-Manager when supplies are needed. Meet monthly with Co- Shelter Manager.
  • Report any concerns related to a child’s well-being to the designated shelter staff.
  • Care for resources and playroom equipment responsibly.
  • Provide regular updates to Co-Shelter Manager
  • Complete incident reports when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated two years of experience working as a childcare provider
  • In addition to the job description, all staff members at ATASK must be able to perform the following essential functions to maintain employment:
    • Be able to observe, see, hear and respond to children’s needs, emergencies and interpersonal conflicts, within the shelter setting.
    • Lift up to 30 pounds from floor to a waist high surface multiple times a day (approximately 10-15 times).
    • Crouch comfortably to a child’s level, maintain eye contact at the child’s level, sit on the floor, and stand up with ease.
    • Reach children at various heights, including elevated play equipment.
    • Assess cognitive, social and physical needs of children and communicate in writing and verbally in the English language at a level that 90 to 95% of parents and other staff can understand and respond to.
    • Manage emotional demands and occasional stress, that comes with working closely with children and families in a shelter environment.
    • Respond quickly to emergencies, including running if needed.
    • Participate fully in all daily activities including singing, interactive play and reading stories.
    • Move quickly and flexibly in response to unfolding situations or to support staff and children as needed.

 

Salary is commensurate with education and experience. ATASK is not able to provide visa sponsorship at this time and therefore applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
